FAQs

What makes this bird nest box environmentally friendly?
Our bird homes are made from recycled wood, reducing waste and the need for new timber. By repurposing materials, we're contributing to sustainability and creating a safe, natural habitat for birds.
What types of birds will use this nest box?
This bird home is suitable for a variety of small bird species such as blue tits, sparrows, and nuthatches. The entrance hole size has been designed to attract these common garden birds.
How do I install the nest box in my garden?
The Warble bird home should be securely mounted on a tree or wall, ideally between 2-4 metres high and facing away from prevailing winds. Avoid placing it in direct sunlight for long periods. Our unique bracket system makes this really easy.... check out our instructions here
Is the recycled wood weatherproof and durable?
Yes, the recycled wood used in our nest boxes is heat treated to withstand the elements, ensuring it provides a safe and long-lasting home for birds throughout the seasons. The roof is also treated with an oil to help it last even longer.
How do I maintain and clean the nest box?
To keep the bird home in good condition, we recommend cleaning it out once a year, ideally in autumn when it’s not in use. Simply remove old nesting material and rinse with hot water – no chemicals needed. There is an access hatch in the back to make this a really quick job!
How is a Warble Bird home different from a normal nest box?
Our bird homes feature a distinctive live-edge wood panel on the front and roof, designed to mimic the texture of a tree trunk, creating an authentic, natural nesting site that attracts birds. Other features like the baby bird ladder and the special bracket system make our product unique.
Can I put this nest box in a city garden?
Yes, our bird homes are perfect for urban environments! Many bird species adapt well to city life, and a nest box provides much-needed shelter in areas where natural nesting spots may be scarce. Even in busy areas, birds like sparrows, great tits, and blue tits can thrive with a safe, quiet place to nest.
Are aluminium nails safe to use with trees?
Yes, aluminium nails are generally safe to use with trees. They are a better option than traditional steel nails for a few key reasons:
- Tree Health – Aluminium nails are less likely to cause significant damage or introduce disease compared to larger, untreated steel nails. They are also resistant to rust, reducing the risk of corrosion affecting the tree.
- Flexibility & Growth – Trees can continue to grow around aluminium nails without severe impact. The material is softer than steel, making it less intrusive.
- Safety for Tools – If the tree is ever cut down and processed with saws or chainsaws, aluminium nails are less damaging to cutting equipment compared to steel or galvanised nails.
When is the best time to put up a nest box?
While you can install a nest box at any time of year, autumn and winter are ideal as this gives birds time to discover it before the breeding season in spring. Birds will start looking for nesting sites as early as January, so having it in place ahead of time is key.
Will birds really use a nest box in my garden?
Birds are attracted to safe spaces that mimic natural nesting sites. A Warble bird home offers this, increasing the chances of birds nesting in your garden. For best results, place it in a sheltered spot, away from human activity, and near trees or shrubs.
Can I paint or decorate the nest box?
If you’d like to paint the outside of your nest box, use non-toxic, water-based paints that are safe for birds. However, it’s best to avoid bright colours as these may deter birds. Stick to natural, muted tones that blend in with the environment. The inside of the box should remain untreated.
Where should I put up a nest box?
To maximise bird safety and nest box occupancy, follow these guidelines:
- Height: Mount 2-4 metres (6-12 feet) above the ground to deter predators.
- Direction: Ideally face the entrance between north & east away from direct sunshine.
- Shelter: Choose a spot near trees or shrubs, but ensure a clear flight path to the hole.
- Minimise Disturbance: Place in a quiet area away from human activity.
- Secure Fixing: The Warble Flexmount bracket can be installed on a fence, shed, wall or tree.
What's wrong with using steel screws in a tree?
Using steel screws in a tree is generally not recommended because they can harm the tree and create long-term issues. Here’s why:
1. Growth Interference and Damage
- Trees naturally grow around foreign objects, but screws remain rigid, which can cause stress or splitting in the wood over time.
- Unlike nails, which allow for some movement, screws hold tightly, restricting natural expansion and growth.
2. Corrosion and Long-Term Problems
- Standard steel screws rust over time, leaching harmful chemicals into the tree.
- Rusted screws weaken, making them prone to breaking, which leaves embedded fragments that can harm the tree further.
3. Danger to Tools and Equipment
- If the tree is later cut down or pruned with a chainsaw, embedded metal screws can seriously damage the cutting equipment, posing safety risks to workers.
- Aluminium nails are often preferred because they are softer and less likely to cause issues if hit with a saw.
Better Alternatives
If attaching something like a bird home to a tree, consider:
- Aluminium or stainless steel nails – They cause minimal damage and are tree-friendly.
- Wire or straps – Wrapping rather than puncturing helps avoid damage. Ensure it’s loose enough to accommodate growth.
- Tree-friendly brackets – Adjustable mounts that allow for movement and expansion.
